Nestled a short way out of the bustle of Johannesburg city life, rests the Hennops Hiking Trail. A short drive from Fourways left me lost in nature. I couldn’t understand why I hadn’t made my way to Hennops sooner. I guess it is the story of “I must do this”…but never got around to doing it, until now. So here’s what you need to know about the hike.
Hennops Hiking Trail Options
The Hennops Hiking Trail and picnic spot is the perfect getaway into a tranquil environment. It has different trails ranging from 6km to 11 km. It is a well maintained trail, with marked directions throughout. There is also a picnic area for those who would like to spend time outdoors and not in the mood for a hike.
We arrived at 7am on a Saturday morning and found that we were amongst so many other like minded people – all high spirited adventurous hikers.
There is ample, secure parking available. The logistics are pretty straightforward, basically fill out an indemnity, pay and off you go.
As with any activities you can give it a go at your own pace. There are steep climbs and uneven surfaces but what is a hike without them? I personally think the hike is suitable for all ages and with a below average fitness level you will still survive the trail.
What to Pack?
- Some Cash
- A cap or a hat
- I suggest wearing long pants as there are lots of thorns and blackjacks (or the police as I learnt some call it)
- Some snacks
Overall it is a beautiful part of Johannesburg and set along the Hennops River. The river actually runs through it. There are animals freely roaming (harmless) and amazing views! I would definitely suggest you try it out.
